126 F.Nascimbeni and collaborative approaches in their teaching (Gillies&Boyle, 2010; Ruys, Van Keer,&Aelterman,2011). Given thecomplexityof the task, afirst important step is todefinewhichcompe- tences shouldbemasteredbyeducators tobeable tomeaningfully and responsibly teach throughopenandnetworkedpractices.Agoodplace tostart lookingfor these competences are the existing competence frameworks that aim to define the com- petences of educators in contemporary societies. An important recent development in this domain is theDigCompEdu frameworkby the JointResearchCentre of the EuropeanCommission, that aims to inspire digital literacy initiatives in European countries targeted toeducators (Kluzer&Pujol, 2018) (Fig.8.1). DigCompEdu isadvocating fora ratherholisticunderstandingofdigital literacy, that considers the neededdigital competences of twenty-first-century educators, in thecentreoftheabovefigure, togetherwiththeirprofessionalengagementactivities, on the left side, andwith the impact that teachers canhaveon their learner’sdigital literacy, on the right side (Nascimbeni, 2018). The framework operationalises this approach through six competencies areas: (1)work effectively in an ICT-rich pro- fessionalenvironment, (2)find,createandsharedigital resources, (3)effectivelyuse digital toolsfor teachingandlearning,(4)enhancelearningassessmentthroughICT, (5)empowerlearnersandfoster learners-centredstrategies throughtheuseofdigital toolsand(6)createdigital literacyamonglearners, in termsofactivecitizenshipand media literacy.Theseareasare thendetailedalong23competences,withexhaustive proficiencydescriptors.By lookingat theway thesecompetencesaredescribed,we find that collaboration (among teachers, with students andwithother stakeholders) inspires thewhole framework, and thatopenness isdefinitelypresent, both in terms ofuseofOERandofstakeholders’engagementandcollaboration.TheDigCompEdu frameworkdoes indeedadvocate forachange in theroleof teachers,by introducing Fig.8.1 TheDigCompEduframework (Kluzer&Priego,2018)
