Wenn man Fabian Schmitt trifft, denkt man: Ach ja, ein Gründertyp. Er kommt dem Klischee, dass alles in der Garage angefangen haben müsste, irgend- wie am nächsten. Und tatsächlich. Rückblickend gibt es diese Garagen- story wirklich. Beim Aufbau des ersten StreetScooter-Prototyps hat sich Fabian Schmitt wochenlang in einer Garage auf dem Firmengelände eingesperrt und jede einzelne Schraube kontrolliert. Der Mann, der seiner Arbeit so beses- sen bis ins Detail nachgeht, ist heute CTO und Mitglied der Geschäftsführung der StreetScooter GmbH. Er zeichnet für alle Entwicklungsaktivitäten verant- wortlich. Jeans und Kapuzenshirt trägt er heute noch lieber als Anzug und Kra- watte. Das passt zu ihm. Seine Denke: Bestehendes in Frage stellen und neue Lösungen entwickeln. Nicht nur einen Standard abarbeiten und das Nahelie- gende realisieren. StreetScooter musste alles auf dem weißen Blatt Papier neu aufbauen und sich viele neue Kompe- tenzen erschließen. Und dabei wurde häufig aus der Not eine Tugend gemacht. Anstatt andere zu kopieren wurden neue Lösungen erdacht. Das sieht er auch im Kontext der Deutschen Post so: „Die Partnerschaft StreetScooter und Deutsche Post war aus Sicht der Ent- wicklung Chance und Herausforderung zugleich: Chance war ein klares Anfor- derungsprofil und Herausforderung das wahrscheinlich anspruchsvollste Anfor- derungsprofil überhaupt.” When you meet Fabian Schmitt, you think, Bingo: here’s your typical start-up guy. And then somehow the cliché that everything probably started in his garage pops into your head. And it’s true. In retrospect, there really is a garage story. When building the first StreetScooter prototype, Fabian Schmitt locked himself up in a garage on the company premises for weeks, checking every single screw. The man who pur- sues his work in such obsessive detail is now CTO and COO of StreetScooter GmbH. He is responsible for all development activities. To this day, he prefers wea- ring jeans and a hoodie to a suit and tie. That suits him. His way of thinking? Challenge what is and develop new solu- tions. Don’t just work off of a standard and realize the obvious. StreetScooter had to rebuild every thing starting with a blank sheet of paper and tap into many new skill sets. And in doing so often made a virtue of necessity. In - stead of copying others, new solutions were thought up. He also sees this in the context of the Deutsche Post. “From a development perspective, the partners- hip between StreetScooter and Deutsche Post was at once both an opportunity and challenge.
