In the case of children’s clubs, those who had a better predisposition towards reading tended to join. Thisdifferenceintheprofileofusersisrelatedtothefactthatbookclubshave grownmostlyundertheauspicesof libraries, whereas literarygatheringsstarted inadulteducationcentres.Inbothgroups, heterogeneityamongtheparticipants was seen inagood light. In the clubs, there are usually monthly meetings where the whole book is discussed(orhalfof it, if it isvery long, suchasTheCavernbySaramago),while indialogicliterarygatheringsameetingisheld—usuallyweekly—withtheaimof discussingaspecificnumberofpagespreviouslydeterminedby thegroup(one chapter, twenty pages, etc.). In a dialogic literary gathering, according to the principles of solidarity andegalitariandialogue, thework is fragmented intoas manyparts as the group feel is needed tomake it accessible to all participants (basedonreasonedarguments). Themeetingsof themembersof a clubandagatheringusually last between one and two hours, as decided by the groups.Meetings are aimed at the dis- cussion and in-depthunderstandingof the bookbeing read.
