2.4 Dataanalysis
Oncethe informationhadbeencollected, thequalitativedatawasorganisedand
analysed following content analysis guidelines, given the need to ascertain—
through ethnographic analysis—how these two innovative practices operated,
and theparticipants’pointsof viewaskeyplayers in theirdevelopment.
3 Results
The results show thatbookclubs anddialogic literary gatheringsdiffer in eight
significant aspects, in addition to their origin, as described in the theoretical
framework.Theyhavebeengroupedinpairs inordertobetteraccountforthem:
(1)participants and timelines, (2)purposeandvariants, (3) coordinator(s) and
moderation, and (4) literaryworksand their selection.
3.1 Participants and timelines
The participants in the literary gatherings had very different reading levels,
predominantlybelongingtoexcludedsocialgroupswithoutaconsistentreading
habit.However,bookclubsusuallyinvolvedadultswithauniversitydegreeanda
highreading level,whohaddevelopedthehabitofreadingtoacertainextent. In
the case of children’s clubs, those who had a better predisposition towards
reading tended to join.
Thisdifferenceintheprofileofusersisrelatedtothefactthatbookclubshave
grownmostlyundertheauspicesof libraries,whereas literarygatheringsstarted
inadulteducationcentres.Inbothgroups,heterogeneityamongtheparticipants
was seen inagood light.
In the clubs, there are usually monthly meetings where the whole book is
discussed(orhalfof it, if it isvery long,suchasTheCavernbySaramago),while
indialogicliterarygatheringsameetingisheld—usuallyweekly—withtheaimof
discussingaspecificnumberofpagespreviouslydeterminedby thegroup(one
chapter, twenty pages, etc.). In a dialogic literary gathering, according to the
principles of solidarity andegalitariandialogue, thework is fragmented intoas
manyparts as the group feel is needed tomake it accessible to all participants
(basedonreasonedarguments).
Themeetingsof themembersof a clubandagatheringusually last between
one and two hours, as decided by the groups.Meetings are aimed at the dis-
cussion and in-depthunderstandingof the bookbeing read. Eachperson’s in-
terpretationbasedontheirexperience isof interest.Usually, thedurationof the
