medical specialists), and a chronic shortage of health professionals.18
Issues with untimely or inaccurate diagnosis, at times leading to
death, have been reported with some regularity.19 The availability and
distribution of medication are both issues.20
COVID-19 Prison Policies, Practices, and Rates of Infection
Federal and provincial responses to COVID-19 have been vari-
able, with some key measures having been taken in some instances,
but overall there are serious deficits. For example, most provincial
systems,21 have taken steps, to various degrees, to release individuals
serving intermittent sentences (weekends) or who had little time left
on their sentences.22 Based on these criteria, Nova Scotia reduced their
incarcerated numbers by half,23 while Ontario released over 2,000 peo-
ple.24 Some provinces have been providing released individuals with
