Public health reifies the penetrating interface of health with vir-tually all aspects of socio-economic reality. For example, access to basic necessities such as food, housing, electricity, water, recre- ational facilities, and other critical public infrastructure are important determinants of public health. Those all face times of reckoning dur- ing public health emergencies. Since the advent of COVID-19, many countries have adopted public health response measures aimed, pri- marily, at stemming its spread while, at the same time, the global race to scientifically understand its pathology and develop a viable vaccine intensifies. The earliest suspicion of the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 in Wuhan, China, was in December 2019.1 Compared to other regions, the virus was slower in spreading to Africa, the world’s poorest and most politically susceptible continent. Egypt confirmed the continent’s first index case on February 14, 2020. On February 27, Nigeria announced the arrival of COVID-19 in Sub-Saharan Africa. Shortly after, on March 11, the World Health 1. China made official report of the virus at WHO Regional Office in Wuhan, Hubei Province, on December 31, 2019.
