Epstein | E 739 schungsprofessur am Institut für Entwicklungsforschung (IDS), später an der School of African and Asian Studies (AFRAS) der Universität Sussex. 1973 führte sie eine kulturver- gleichende Studie zu Bevölkerungswachstum und ländlicher Armut in Asien und Afrika durch, eine weitere vierjährige Studie widmete sich der Untersuchung der Rolle am Land lebender Frauen in der ländlichen Entwicklung Asiens. 1974 übersiedelte sie im Rahmen eines einjährigen Forschungsstipendiums am Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) der Stanford University nach Kalifornien. 1984 wurde sie an der Univer- sität Sussex pensioniert. T. S. E. lehrte u. a. an Universitäten in Manchester, Irvine, Madang (Südindien) und Waigani (Papua-Neuguinea). T. S. E. gilt als Pionierin der angewandten Ökonomischen Anthropologie und Entwicklungsanthropologie, die einen praxisorientier- ten, interdisziplinären Ansatz verfolgt und auf die Notwendigkeit eines partizipatorischen, kultur- und gendersensitiven Zugangs im Bereich der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit hin- weist. Sie ist Gründerin und Mitglied einer Reihe von Institutionen auf dem Gebiet der Entwicklungsforschung und als Konsulentin für Entwicklungsfragen tätig. Sie ist Mitglied von Fachgesellschaften wie der Association of the British Anthropologists und der Indian Anthropological Association und wurde u. a. mit dem Order of the British Empire (OBE) ausgezeichnet.
