Abiturientenlehrgänge -kurse#
Abiturientenlehrgaenge (secondary school graduate courses): introduced in the second half of the 19th century for those having attended Mittelschulen secondary schools, enabling them to complete a shortened form of a berufsbildende Schule (vocational school). In the First Republic of Austria, the one-year secondary school graduate courses at the trade academies had the highest enrolment, whereas the courses of study at institutions for teacher training were most popular after 1945. After the Paedagogische Akademie (pedagogical academy, from 1966) and Kolleg (college, from 1983) were introduced, these short courses of vocational training were no longer necessary.
