Amtsarzt#
Amtsarzt: (approx.) medical officer, doctor who carries out official tasks in public service (§ 42 para. 1 of the Austrian Aerztegesetz (Law on Physicians)). These doctors work in the administrative departments of chartered towns, in district commissions, in the boards of public health of Austrian provinces and in the Federal Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs. Austria has a total of 246 medical officers, two thirds of whom are general practitioners. The prerequisite for the position has been the "Physikatspruefung" (medical officer's qualification exam) since 1873.
