Poverty: In Austria, defined as the economic situation of individuals or population groups who cannot themselves provide for their sustenance. Up to the second half of the 19th century a considerable proportion of Austria's population was poor in accordance with the above definition; since then poverty has been diminished by the creation of new jobs (industrialisation, economic growth) and social welfare; still, it was not until approximately 1950 that poverty in absolute terms was largely overcome in Austria. Relative poverty, however, has persisted and is even increasing ("new poor", hidden poverty particularly in rural areas).
