Attila, † 453, from 445 King of the Huns; the centre of his kingdom lay between the rivers Danube and Theiss in present day Hungary. He forced the Eastern Roman Empire to greatly increase its subsidy payments to him. A. and his army of conquered and allied Germanic tribes invaded Gaul via the Danube route in spring 451, but lost the battle on the Catalaunian Plains against Aetius, leader of the West Goths.
