Bad Zell#
Bad Zell, Upper Austria, market town in the district of Freistadt, alt. 515 m, pop. 2,687, area 45.50 km2, spa town and holiday resort in the southern Muehlviertel region, in the Kettenbach Valley; therapy centre (with a cold radioactive spring with a low content of minerals carried in solution, dedicated to St. Hedwig, treatment of rheumatism), Oesterreichisches Institut fuer Freizeitforschung (Institute for Leisure Research) in Oberdorf; health tourism (63,050 overnight stays), wood processing. First documentary mention in 1208, late Gothic parish church with frescoes (Baroque interior from the year 1746), pillory (1574), mansions of wealthy citizens, Zellhof Palace (first documented in the 13th century), Prandegg Castle (15th century, today a ruin), ruins of Reichenstein castle and Rutenstein castle.
