Bartholomew, Saint, (in German, Bartholomaeus); Apostle, feast day on August 24, attributes: skin, knife; saint venerated by farmers, patron saint for cattle and wine, St. Bartholomew day was market day and marked the beginning of pig fattening (origin of epithet "Saubartl" - "sau" meaning "pig", "Bartl" abbreviation for Bartholomaeus - for a dirty or slovenly person). In the provinces of Vienna and Lower Austria, the quality of wine was examined on St. Bartholomew day.
