b. Berlin (Germany), Jan. 2, 1910, d. Basle (Switzerland), April 15, 1990, dramatist and novelist. Came to Vienna shortly before Hitler's rise to power in Germany, married the daughter of the satirist A. Roda Roda. After 1938 emigration to Switzerland, 1941 to Brazil, 1944 to New York; 1948 returned to Vienna. His success came with the satirical play "Der Bockerer" (1946, with P. Preses; 1981 adapted for the screen by F. Antel), which focused on his experiences with National Socialism.
