Bevölkerungsdichte#
Population Density, average number of people per unit area. In Austria, the average population density is roughly 93 (persons per km2); quite a low rate compared with other countries (Netherlands 334, Belgium 320, Germany 250). In terms of the permanently inhabited area rather than the total national territory, the rate lies at 240. Areas with a particularly high population density in Austria are: the Vienna basin, the Linz-Wels area (Upper Austria), the Rhine valley in Vorarlberg, the basins on the edge of the Alps (Graz basin/Styria, Klagenfurt basin/Carinthia, Flachgau area in Salzburg) and the wide longitudinal valleys (Mur-Muerz valley/Styria, Inn valley/Tyrol).
