Wood Carving: In some areas of Austria, especially in the Tyrol, Salzburg, Upper Austria and Styria, this traditional craft still lives on as a second occupation. The most popular materials are limewood or stone pine (in the Tyrol). Since the 17th century, the Groedner Valley (Val Gardena) in the South Tyrol has been the centre of woodcarving. Altars, statues, cribs, animal figures, clockstands, picture frames, sleds, toys etc. were produced there. The Tyrol is still regarded as the centre of crib carving in Austria today. Another important field is the production of small figures, toys and souvenirs of all kinds as well as the traditional wooden masks of the mountain areas.
