Bittner, Julius#
b. Vienna, April 9, 1874, d. Vienna, Jan. 9, 1939, composer of operas, full-time lawyer (judge and 1920-1922 civil servant in the Ministry of Justice); exponent of the late Romantic opera after R. Wagner; used Austrian and Alpine themes in his work; for his operas he often wrote the text himself. Numerous prizes and honours including the Raimund Prize 1918 and the Prize of the City of Vienna 1925; one of the most successful Austrian opera composers in the first half of the 20th century but forgotten after 1945.
