Denkmalschutz#
Historical Monuments, Protection of: preservation of historically significant objects of public interest for cultural reasons, regulated by law. It is the responsibility of the federal government and is governed by the Law on the Protection of Monuments of September 25, 1923, as amended in 1978 and 1990. Monuments owned by public corporations are classified as historical monuments as long as the competent authority does not decide otherwise. Private buildings are classified as historical monuments by way of administrative decision. The export of cultural objects is also regulated by law. Its enforcement lies with the Bundesdenkmalamt, which has subordinate offices ("Landeskonservatorat") in the provinces.
