b. Vienna, Dec. 11, 1862, d. Vienna, Jan. 6, 1928. Alpinist, geographer, geologist and palaeontologist, from 1897 professor at the University of Vienna; mainly concerned with biostratigraphy, esp. of the Triassic ammonites; also undertook expeditions to the Himalayas and other mountain ranges.
