Donner, Matthäus#
b. Essling in Marchfeld (now Vienna), Aug. 29, 1704, d. Vienna, Aug. 26, 1756. Sculptor and medallist, pupil of his brother Georg Raphael Donner. Attended the Academy of Fine Arts, 1726-1732, after which D. was appointed Imperial medallist. Probably professor of sculpture at the Academy from 1743 to his death; from 1749 head mint iron cutter at the minting authority in Vienna, where he was especially active. In his numerous official functions, D. contributed greatly to the propagation of G. R. D.'s formal principles.
