Eimer#
Eimer (pail), a vessel with a handle. Until the 19th century leather pails or buckets were used as fire buckets. In Austria, a pail - Eimer - as a measure of capacity contained 56.6 (also 58 or 60.1) litres; it was used as a standard measure for wine. In the 16th century, one Eimer of wine contained 32 achterings, an achtering being approximately 1/8 litre (later it contained 35 or 38 achterings).
