Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria), Dec. 16, 1933, jurist and politician (Austrian People's Party, OeVP). 1972-1991 managing director and partner in a film production company; 1973-1987 member of the Landtag of Vienna and City Council, 1977-1987 Secretary-General and 1984-1991 Federal Head of the Austrian Women's Movement, 1987-1991 Federal Minister for the Environment, Youth and Family Affairs, 1987-1993 president of the European Women's Union, since 1996 member of the European Parliament. During her term of office as a Federal Minister important laws on environmental issues were passed (e.g. law on chemicals, clean air law and a law relating to smog alarm).
