Franz-Joseph-Land#

Franz Josef Land, island group east of Spitzbergen in the Arctic Ocean (more than 60, mainly ice-covered islands, total area circa 20,000 km2, uninhabited), the northernmost islands in Eurasia, belonged to the Soviet Union from 1925, now belongs to Russia. In 1873 the Franz Josef Land was discovered by the Austrian expedition led by K. Weyprecht and J. v. Payer and named after Emperor Franz Josef I. Campaigns to rename the islands Fridtjof Nansen Land or Lomonosov Land never gained popularity North Pole Expedition.
