Abortion, Legal Limit for: In Austria, abortion is not punishable by law if performed within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy and preceded by medical counselling. After decades of debate over a new legal regulation of Abortion, the abortion limit was introduced on January 1 1975 under a Socialist government. The measure was supported primarily by groups within the Socialist and autonomous women's movement. Resistance from the Catholic conservative camp was expressed in the form of the "national petition for the protection of human life", initiated by the group "Aktion Leben", which was signed by 895,665 persons (almost 18 % of those eligible to vote).
