b. Vienna, June 27, 1802, d. Vienna, Nov. 18, 1874, medal maker. Engraver at the Imperial Mint, father of the painters Franz Xaver Gaul und Gustav Gaul, studied under J. Klieber. From 1866-1874 director of the Vienna Engraver's Academy; cut the stamps for numerous coins and perfected the embossing process with his method of stamp duplication.
