Geisteswissenschaften#
Arts (liberal arts, humanities), those branches of learning (esp. languages, literature, history etc.) which are associated with creative skill and distinguish themselves from the sciences in terms of both subject matter and methods. The German term Geisteswissenschaften (literally, "sciences of the mind") has been used in that sense since the mid-19th century. The liberal arts are an essential constituent of those branches of learning which were formerly parts of what was called the Faculty of Philosophy and which, under the University Organisation Act of 1975, was divided into the Faculty of Liberal Arts (Geisteswissenschaftliche Fakultaet) and the Faculty of Sciences (Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultaet) and at the University of Vienna into the Faculty of Formal and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Fundamental and Interdisciplinary Studies and the Faculty of Liberal Arts.
