Gorbach, Alfons#
Gorbach, Alfons, b. Imst (Tyrol), Sept. 2, 1898, d. Graz (Styria), July 31, 1972, studied law, politician (Austrian People's Party, OeVP). 1933-1938 provincial leader of the vaterlaendische Front (Fatherland Front) in Styria, 1938-1942 and 1944-1945 concentration camp imprisonment. From 1960-1963 federal chairman of the Austrian People's Party (OeVP), 1945-1970 member of the Nationalrat, 1961-1964 Federal Chancellor. After 1945 pursued a policy of reconciliation towards national socialists and supported the grand coalition between the Austrian People's Party (OeVP) and the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPOe). Succeeded by J. Klaus as party chairman in 1963 and as federal chancellor in 1964.
