Grossgmain, Salzburg, municipality in the district of Salzburg-Land, alt. 540 m, pop. 2,100, area 22.82 km2, summer holiday resort (126,151 overnight stays) at the western foot of the Untersberg mountain, near the city of Salzburg, on the border to Germany. - Customs office, training department of the Salzburg rural police headquarters, convalescent home for heart-disease patients (of the salaried employees´ pension insurance agency), sanatorium, young people´s home. Service sector predominant (particularly social services), also sawmill and carpentry.- Originally Late Gothic parish church, Baroque alterations in 1731, with imitation-stone Madonna (14th century) and Gothic panel paintings (1499) by the "Master of Grossgmain"; Plainburg Castle ruin (first documented in 1140, called "Salzbuechsl", "little salt box"); typical old Salzburg farmhouses (Einhof, 17th -19th centuries). Salzburg open-air museum (typical farmhouses, flour mills, etc., more than 50 houses and annexed buildings from 16th -19th with household equipment); Untersberg nature preserve, Wolfschwang game preserve.
