Hörnigk Horneck, Philipp Wilhelm von#

b. Frankfurt am Main (Germany), Jan. 23, 1640, d. Passau (Germany), Oct. 23, 1714, economist; friend and brother-in-law of the mercantilist J. J. Becher. Came to Vienna in 1664/1665; from 1673 compiled trade statistics for the German and Bohemian patrimonial lands. In 1684 publication of his work "Oesterreich ueber alles, wann es nur will", one of the most important writings on Mercantilism (15 editions before 1784), which stresses the great economic potential of the Habsburgs' territories, which he for the first time regarded as one economic entity, to which he referred as "Austria". Left Vienna when his prospects failed because of his association with Becher, who suffered economic failure, and entered the service of Count J. P. Lambert (from 1679 bishop of Passau). corresponded with G. W. Leibniz and carried out important historical investigations in Passau.
