HIV#
HIV, "Human Immunodeficiency Virus", identified in 1983 as the pathogen causing AIDS. HIV infections can be identified by an HIV antibody test, which has to be performed in conjunction with medical counselling under the Austrian AIDS law. This test only yields conclusive results after a time lapse of approximately 3 months after infection.
The number of HIV-infected persons in Austria is not exactly known
because it is not a notifiable disease, but is estimated to have
ranged between 9,000 and 15,000 in 1999.
