Hagen, Johann Georg#
Hagen, Johann Georg, b. Bregenz (Vorarlberg), March 6, 1847, d. Rome (Italy), Sept. 5, 1930, Jesuit, astronomer, from 1888 director of the planetarium in Washington, from 1906 of the planetarium in the Vatican. Discovered the interstellar phenomenon of "Dark Nebula" (also called "Absorption Nebula") named after him in German which was later discovered to be an optical illusion. Improved astronomical photography, discovered mechanical proof for the rotation of the earth and attempted the exploration of variable stars.
