Halbturn#
Halbturn, Burgenland, market town in the district of Neusiedl am See, alt. 130 m, pop. 1,856, area 55.23 km2, in the Seewinkel area at the south foot of the Parndorfer Platte plateau, close to the Hungarian border. - Northern regional office of adult education (in Halbturn Castle); viniculture. - First documented mention 1466; 1529 and 1683 destroyed by Turkish invaders; typical settlement from the times after the Turkish invasions, with straight layout of roads; Baroque parish church (1730, probably based on plans by J. E. Fischer v. Erlach); cemetery with tombstones from the 18th century; St. Sebastian column (1678); Trinity column (1713); north of the village of Schloss, former hunting seat of Karl VI, older part of the building from the 17th century destroyed in 1683, re-constructed 1701-1711 by J. L. von Hildebrandt, ceiling fresco (1765) by F. A. Maulbertsch, since 1975 used for exhibitions, branch office of the Oesterreichische Galerie; large park (1724-1727).
