Hanak, Anton#
b. Brno, Czech Republic (then Bruenn), March 22, 1875, d. Vienna, Jan. 7, 1934, sculptor. Studied under E. v. Hellmer at the Vienna Academy and was a founding member of the Vienna Secession, the Wiener Werkstaette and the Oesterreichischer Werkbund. H. was teacher at the Vienna College of Arts and Crafts and from 1932 professor at the Vienna Academy. Almost all of his works are marked by visions and symbols (e.g. "Der letzte Mensch" ("The last of mankind"), 1917; "Der brennende Mensch", ("Man burning") 1922). He created sculptural decorations for several of J. Hoffmann's buildings (including Villa Skywa, Primavesi country house, Villa Ast) as well as for municipal housing projects of the City of Vienna during the 1920s. his works also include numerous portrait busts and monuments (war monument at the Vienna Central Cemetery, 1925). H. museum in Langenzersdorf.
