Harrach, Hochadelsgeschlecht#
Harrach, Austro-Bohemian family of the higher nobility; still exists (the Bohemian line died out in 1732). Owned territories in Austria, Carinthia and Styria in the 14th century; acquired Rohrau in 1524; became imperial counts in 1627. 1690 Count Ferdinand Bonaventura I Harrach bought the ruin of the house the family had owned 1600-1658 on the Freyung in Vienna and commissioned D. Martinelli to build Harrach Palace. >From 1870-1970, the palace housed the picture gallery of Count Aloys Thomas Raimund Harrach, which is now kept at Rohrau castle (Lower Austria). The family sold their palace in Vienna in 1975. Further members of the family: Count Franz Anton Harrach, Count Johann Joseph Philipp Harrach, Count Karl Borromaeus Harrach.
