Hauer, Franz#

b. Weissenkirchen in der Wachau (Lower Austria), May 19, 1867, d. Vienna, June 5, 1914, restaurant owner, art collector; father of Leopold Hauer. Became landlord of the Griechenbeisl restaurant in Vienna in 1897; his son Leopold opened a gallery there in 1960 ("Galerie im Griechenbeisl"); from 1907 F. Hauer was one of the most important collectors of modern Austrian art (e.g. A. Egger-Lienz, E. Schiele, O. Kokoschka, K. Sterrer, A. Faistauer); the collection was auctioned soon after his death.
