Haupt- und Staatsaktion#
Haupt- und Staatsaktion ("Chief and State Plays"), the term used polemically by J. C. Gottsched in his struggle to promote "regular" tragedies following the French model to replace the repertory of the English Comedians and German itinerant troupes; the term "Hauptaktion" designated the serious plays in contrast to the farces played at the conclusion of the performance, while "Staatsaktion" referred to the historical or political subject.
