Haushalt#
Household (German: Haushalt): According to Austrian law, the occupants of a house regarded as a unit where one or more persons live. While membership in a household is often the result of marriage or family relationships, such circumstances are not a necessary prerequisite for defining a household. In simple terms, households are classified as one-person (single) households and multi-person households. Further distinctions can be made in terms of the number of generations living together, the number of children or other relatives, or the number of persons not related with one another. In Austria there were 2.76 million private households in 1991, almost 30% of which were one-person households. Household size has sharply declined over the last 40 years, amounting to an average of 3.11 persons in 1951 and only 2.51 in 1991.
