Marriage Statistics: The number of marriages contracted per 1000 inhabitants in a given year is referred to as the marriage rate. The current marriage rate in Austria is 5.9 marriages per 1000 inhabitants, an extremely low proportion as compared with earlier periods. During the second half of the 19th century the marriage rate was approximately 8 per thousand, rose to more than 13 after 1918, dropped to approx. 7.5 in the inter-war period, picked up again to reach 10.8 after 1945 and has been steadily declining ever since. Causes for the decline are seen in the reduction of the percentage of persons of marriageable age and a growing tendency for young people to live as singles or to live in partnerships without marrying.
