Hochkönig#
Hochkoenig Mountain, 2,941 m, highest and only glaciated massif of the Berchtesgaden Alps, separated from the Steinernes Meer mountain range by the Torscharte col; the plateau glacier ("Uebergossene Alm") points to the north and features the legendary "Teufelsloecher" caves; steep precipices to the south. Copper mining in Mitterberg and Muehlbach until 1977. Mountain refuges: Matrashaus (2,941 m), Erichhuette (1,545 m), Mandlwandhaus (1,300 m), Arthurhaus (1,502 m).
