Hofgericht#
Hofgericht court of law: 1) in Lower Austria and Upper Austria in early modern times often the court of law of a monastery responsible for administering justice to its subjects; 2) court of justice of the prince of a realm, initially developed from the "Hoftaiding" (late Babenberg period) as court of law of the ministeriales (generally called "court judges" after 1314). Because the nobility exerted a strong influence on the Hofgerichte, a new Hofgericht was established under Albrecht V, presided over by the duke and renamed "Kammergericht" ("chamber court") by Friedrich III.
