Hornstein#
Hornstein, Burgenland, market town in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung, alt. 273 m, pop. 2,593 (1981: pop. 2,258), area 37.09 km2, small industrial and commercial town on the western foot of the Leithagebirge mountains, on the border to Lower Austria. 75 % of the 1,038 employed persons (1991) work in the manufacturing industry: fittings, ceramic parts for fittings, glass fibre and glass textiles, plastic parts, coils and transformers; reprographic studio, elastic tape factory, plant manufacturing, production of moulded stone and window casings. Parish church (1782) with Rococo tabernacle; Pietà column (1715); remains of fortress ruins. The Sonnenberg mountain (484 m) east of Hornstein is the highest elevation of the Leithagebirge mountains.
