Hyrtl, Josef#
Hyrtl, Josef, b. Eisenstadt (Burgenland), Dec. 7, 1810, d. Perchtoldsdorf (Lower Austria), July 17, 1894, anatomist; professor at the University of Prague and from 1845 at the University of Vienna. The Vienna anatomic school reached its zenith under his influence; improved anatomical technique (especially by means of new injection procedures), and pioneered the production of anatomical specimens. Founded the Museum of Comparative Anatomy in Vienna (1850) and provided nearly all anatomy museums of the world with specimens. From 1874 engaged in research on the development of medical terminology. He left his fortune to charity ("H. Waisenhaus" orphanage in Moedling, etc.).
