Irredentismus#
Irredentism, political movement formed around 1877 in Italy, which advocated the union with Italy of all Italian-speaking territories of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy ("terre irredente" = the unredeemed lands: especially Trentino, Istria, Trieste, the coast of Dalmatia). From 1900 irredentism gained great influence on public opinion in Italy, won many supporters in Austria, enforced an anti-Austrian policy, and in 1915 succeeded in making the Italian government enter World War I.
