Jakobus der Ältere, Heiliger#
Jakobus der Aeltere (James the Great), saint, feast day July 25, d. around 44, apostle, patron of pilgrims, mostly depicted with pilgrim staff and scallop shell. Traditional forms of the name "Jakob" in Austria: Jakl, Jogl ( Joglland). Patron saint of farmers, harvests and wells. In Austria about 200 churches are dedicated to him. On the feast day, church fairs (called Jakobitrunk, Jakobsen or Jogassen) are held in Vienna, in Styria and in Salzburg; other communities celebrate the feast with competitive games (sword dances, wrestling at the Hundstein in Salzburg, "Jakobischuetzentanz" with flag throwing at St. Jakob, Salzburg).
