Jentschke, Willibald#

Jentschke, Willibald, b. Vienna, Dec. 6, 1911, physicist. Studied in Vienna; 1947-1956 did research in the USA, from 1949 at the University of Illinois. From 1956 professor of experimental physics at the University of Hamburg and until 1970 director of the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchronotron (DESY, German Electron Synchronoton); 1971-1775 Director-General of Laboratory I of the CERN nuclear research centre in Genf; afterwards professor in Hamburg again until 1980. Carried out fundamental research in elementary particle physics, participated in the discovery of "neutral currents" in 1973. Awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1983.
