Joachim, Josef, b. Kittsee (Burgenland), June 28, 1831, d. Berlin (Germany), Aug. 15, 1907, violin virtuoso, composer, conductor and teacher; his quartet was among the best of his time. From 1843 numerous journeys, acquainted with J. Brahms, C. Schumann, F. Liszt. From 1868 director of the Berlin University of Music. Numerous works (e.g. violin concertos by J. Brahms, A. Dvorak and R. Schumann) dedicated to him.
