Jois#
Jois, Burgenland, market town in the district of Neusiedl am See, alt. 150 m, pop. 1,277, area 25.91 km2, in the north-eastern part of the Leithagebirge Mountains, north of Lake Neusiedl. - Summer tourism (25,156 overnight stays), wine-growing and fruit-growing (especially cherries). - Site of archaeological finds from the Neolithic to Roman times, first documented mention in 1214; Baroque old parish church (1757-1770), with high altar (1749-1752) from the parish church of Sopron (transferred 1865); new parish church (1898, enlarged 1937); lantern (15th century), Russenkreuz (1747, stone monument, name derives from Russenbaum=Ruestenbaum=elm tree), Mariensaeule (monument dedicated to the Virgin Mary,1877).
