Jordan, Franz Sylvester#
b. Omes (municipality of Axams, Tyrol), Dec. 30, 1792, d. Kassel (Germany), April 15, 1861, law scholar and politician. Studied at the Universities of Vienna and Landshut, 1821-1839 Professor at the University of Marburg; from 1830 member of the constituent state parliament (Landtag) of Hesse, played a leading part in drawing up the Hessian Constitution. In 1839 arrested for alleged high treason and temporarily deprived of all official functions, returned to public life after the revolution of 1848. From 1848 member of the Frankfurt National Assembly, 1850 representative of the government in the Parliament of Erfurt. Represented liberalism and contributed decisively to the development of constitutionalism in Germany.
