Judo: Before the First World War, the Japanese weaponless art of self-defence called jiu-jitsu (alternative spellings: jujitsu, jujutsu) became popular in Austria. A milder form for competitive sports called Judo, initiated by Jigoro Kano, came to Austria in the 1930s. Since the 1970s, women´s championships have also been held on a regular basis. Gerda Winkelbauer and Edith Hrovat have been winners a number of times at the European and world championships. P. Seisenbacher won gold medals in Judo at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. The Austrian Judo Association, founded in 1948, (oesterreichischer Judo-Verband, OeJV) comprises 214 Judo clubs and 15,600 members (1993); the associated Jiu-Jitsu Association of Austria (Jiu-Jitsu-Verband Oesterreich, JJVOe) 41 clubs and 1,824 members.
