Jurmann, Walter#
Jurmann, Walter, b. Vienna, Oct. 12, 1903, d. Budapest (Hungary), June 17, 1971, composer. Studied medicine, but became a composer as a result of the influence of R. Strauss. In the 1920s wrote such successful songs as "Veronika, der Lenz ist da" and "Mein Gorilla hat ´ne Villa im Zoo". Emigrated to Paris and then to Hollywood; highly successful as composer of film music, particularly for films starring the Marx Brothers. The title song to the film "San Francisco" (1936, with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy) resulted in his being made an honorary citizen of San Francisco. When he was only 40, Jurmann retired almost completely from his profession.
